{"id":21,"date":"2011-04-17T05:50:40","date_gmt":"2011-04-17T05:50:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2016-07-21T16:18:59","modified_gmt":"2016-07-21T23:18:59","slug":"a-l-l-nature-walk","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/branches\/projects\/a-l-l-nature-walk","title":{"rendered":"Bernal Heights Living Library &#038; Think Park Nature Walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em><strong>Bernal Heights Living Library &amp; Think Park Nature Walk<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>By Bonnie Ora Sherk <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><br \/>\nFounder &amp; Director, Life Frames, Inc. &amp; A Living Library<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #(color);\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><em>A Living Library \u00a0= A.L.L. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><strong><em>Transforming communities and schools by interconnecting local biological, cultural, technological resources \u2013 past, present, future<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #(color);\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><em>A Think Park <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><strong><em>is meant to make us think, feel, and be more empathetic<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Community plans have been underway for almost 10 years to create the <strong><em>Bernal Heights Living Library &amp; Think Park Nature Walk<\/em><\/strong> linking schools, parks, streets, housing developments, and other open spaces leading to the Islais Creek at the south end of St. Mary\u2019s Park. Already, almost 600 California Native Trees have been planted along Appleton in front of Junipero Serra Child Development Center and College Hill Reservoir, in Holly Courts, in Holly Park, and in St. Mary\u2019s Park, and soon interpretive signage will be added, all funded by California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.\u00a0 Plans are also being developed to include more plantings around Junipero Serra Elementary School, and in Alemany Public Housing Development, with understory and added interpretive signage for all sites, if another recently applied-for state grant is awarded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">A Community Master Plan for the <em>Bernal Heights Living Library &amp; Think Park Nature Walk<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> was developed by diverse community participants including children, youth, and adults, led by Life Frames, Inc. and Bonnie Ora Sherk, in 2002-03, funded by Mayor\u2019s Office of Community Development and San Francisco Foundation.\u00a0 Trees were planted by school children, neighbors, volunteers from Salesforce, One Brick, Jewish Community Federation, with great help from Recreation &amp; Park, Department Public Works, Housing Authority, SF Public Utilities Commission.\u00a0\u00a0 According to Karen Huggins, Public Housing Development President of Holly Courts\u2019 Resident\u2019s Council, \u201c<\/span><em>The Living Library Nature Walk that will eventually frame the Islais Creek Watershed is more than just a nature walk.\u00a0 It is a bridge connecting the whole community together with the same visions for the future, making a connection daily as we walk by each other.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/bernal-heights-living-library-nature-walk\/bernal-heights-living-library-park-nature-walk\/attachment\/southbernalnaturewalkconceptualplan\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1204\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"153\" height=\"250\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1204\" style=\"width: 270px; height: 405px;\" title=\"SouthBernalNatureWalkConceptualPlan\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/SouthBernalNatureWalkConceptualPlan-153x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/SouthBernalNatureWalkConceptualPlan-153x250.jpg 153w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/SouthBernalNatureWalkConceptualPlan-629x1024.jpg 629w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/SouthBernalNatureWalkConceptualPlan.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 153px) 100vw, 153px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">When fully implemented in future Phases, another goal of our work is to <strong><em>Frame the Islais Creek Watershed<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The <em>Islais Creek Watershed<\/em> is the largest in San Francisco and includes at least 11 communities:\u00a0 Bernal Heights, Mission, Potrero Hill, Bayview-Hunter&#8217;s Point, Portola, Crocker-Amazon, Excelsior, OMI, Sunnyside, Glen Park, Noe Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>The New Gold Is Old:\u00a0 Fresh Water<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3584 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Islais_Creek_Watershed_PRESS.jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Islais_Creek_Watershed_PRESS.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Islais_Creek_Watershed_PRESS-250x204.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Islais_Creek_Watershed_PRESS-1024x836.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ultimately, a goal and opportunity, is to create the <strong><em>Islais Creek Living Library &amp; Think Park Nature Walk <\/em><\/strong>comprised of native trees and understory, integrated edible landscapes, other related elements, education programs, green skills job training, that will link multiple parks, schools, streets, public housing, rights-of-way, and other open spaces within the <em>Watershed<\/em>.\u00a0 We also envision that we will be daylighting the creeks where possible, and using creek water to rehabilitate native habitat, and also using ground water and storm water for irrigation of our new trees and understory.\u00a0 Also envisioned is linking diverse parts of the Watershed, through <em>Green Powered Digital Gateways<\/em>, so people in different communities can see how they are interconnected.\u00a0 Another potential, is that St. Mary\u2019s Park, where a large part of our <em>Nature Walk<\/em> is located, could also become a community-wide <em>Watershed and Urban Forestry Education Center<\/em> with hands-on, outdoor classrooms, in addition to those in the schools where we currently work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">On May10, 2010, Supervisor David Campos, based on our work and others, like Clean Water Action and Urban Creeks Council, called a public hearing for the Supervisor&#8217;s Land Use Committee to address issues of daylighting creeks in San Francisco, particularly as it relates to the new SFPUC Wastewater Master Plan and development of new sewer infrastructure.\u00a0 The result of all, has been to move the PUC towards a more holistic, systemic Whole Watershed approach, in which we will be able to separate, use, and daylight fresh creek water where possible, within our urban setting<em>.\u00a0 The New Gold Is Old:\u00a0 Fresh Water<\/em>.\u00a0 Supervisor Campos will hold a follow-up Hearing to review PUC changes regarding daylighting creeks and related issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>Branch Living Library &amp; Think Parks<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">In addition to our <em>Nature Walk<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> and <\/span><em>Watershed<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> initiatives, Life Frames also develops <\/span><em>Branch Living Library &amp; Think Parks<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, funded by SF Department of Children, Youth &amp; Their Families.\u00a0 In SF, we currently work with over 800 children and youth each month, at 6 schools in 3 neighborhoods, with interdisciplinary, standards-based, hands-on ecological transformation of their school and community.\u00a0 Four of those schools are part of <\/span><em>the Islais Creek Watershed<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> and their transformed campuses are part of the proposed larger network of linked places to eventually <\/span><em>Frame the Islais Creek Watershed<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">: (Junipero Serra ES &amp;
