{"id":8,"date":"2011-04-17T05:47:15","date_gmt":"2011-04-17T05:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2014-03-02T15:35:47","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T23:35:47","slug":"omiexcelsior","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/branches\/omiexcelsior","title":{"rendered":"OMI\/Excelsior Living Library &#038; Think Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/category\/omiexcelsior\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>OMI\/Excelsior Living Library &amp; Think Park<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0serves children and youth from PreK through 12th grade at\u00a0<em>San Miguel Child Development Center,<\/em><em>\u00a0James Denman Middle School, Balboa High School, and Leadership High School<\/em>, and operates Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. \u00a0The unique, place-based, ecological learning program has linked the environmental and cultural lives of students from the adjacent schools since 1998.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-all-plans.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5464\" alt=\"OMI all plans\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-all-plans-657x1024.jpg\" width=\"657\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-all-plans-657x1024.jpg 657w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-all-plans-160x250.jpg 160w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-all-plans.jpg 1300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><em>Life Frames, Inc<\/em>.<em>&#8216;s<\/em> transformation integrates the ecological, built, and cultural resources of the site &#8211; past, present and future &#8211; and links to the curricula of the schools. The students learn math, science, social studies, language arts, technology, the arts, and other subjects through involvement in interdisciplinary, project-based learning.\u00a0Students have planned, designed, built and maintained the garden elements &#8211; all the while learning how to look after their natural environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-Street-Before-After.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5460\" alt=\"OMI Street Before &amp; After\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-Street-Before-After-1024x308.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-Street-Before-After-1024x308.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-Street-Before-After-250x75.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-Street-Before-After.jpg 1989w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1999, elementary, middle and high school students with a team of landscapers, led by Life Frames and Bonnie Ora Sherk, with Tony Wolcott and the Urban Tree Foundation, dug up yards of concrete and about 200 California Native Trees were planted, creating a unique <em><strong>Native Learning Zone<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Streetscape Transformation<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-before-and-after.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5459\" alt=\"OMI before and after\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-before-and-after-1024x469.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-before-and-after-1024x469.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-before-and-after-250x114.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/OMI-before-and-after.jpg 1318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Weedy, unused ground between Denman and San Miguel also became an Organic Vegetable, Flower and Herb Garden, now called the <em><strong>Lower Garden<\/strong><\/em>.
