{"id":2421,"date":"2011-12-26T21:47:08","date_gmt":"2011-12-26T21:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?p=2421"},"modified":"2012-02-14T23:24:58","modified_gmt":"2012-02-14T23:24:58","slug":"early-art-bonnie-ora-sherk-featured-sfmoma-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/art-landscape-architecture-systemic-design\/early-art-bonnie-ora-sherk-featured-sfmoma-show","title":{"rendered":"Early Public Landscape Art By Bonnie Ora Sherk Featured In SFMOMA Show &#8211; SF&#8217;s Original &#8220;Parklet&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Portable Parks l &#8211; lll<\/strong><\/em> (1970), an early artwork by Bonnie Ora Sherk, (with Howard Levine), that transformed three barren, sterile, urban &quot;dead spaces&quot; into green, living environments replete with sod, palm trees, and live animals is being featured in an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.&nbsp; The show, <em><strong>Fifty Years of Bay Area Art and the SECA Art Award<\/strong><\/em>, opened on December 7 and continues through April 3, 2012.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Portable Parks l &#8211; lll<\/strong><\/em>, won the <em>1st SECA Vernal Equinox Award<\/em> that year, and for four days the performance installation moved to three sites in San Francisco:&nbsp; the former James Lick Freeway that crossed over Market Street; two concrete islands adjacent to the&nbsp; Mission\/Van Ness Offramp; the whole street of Maiden Lane between Stockton and Grant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/art-landscape-architecture-systemic-design\/early-art-bonnie-ora-sherk-featured-sfmoma-show\/attachment\/portablepark1_aftermarket\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2422\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2422\" height=\"742\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/portablePark1_afterMarket-e1324935417531-1024x845.jpg\" title=\"portablePark1_afterMarket\" width=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/portablePark1_afterMarket-e1324935417531-1024x845.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/portablePark1_afterMarket-e1324935417531-250x206.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/portablePark1_afterMarket-e1324935417531.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In her Catalog essay for the Exhibition, <strong><em>SFMOMA Curator, Tanya Zimbardo<\/em><\/strong> says about the work:&nbsp; &quot;<em>Bonnie Ora Sherk&rsquo;s first public artwork (p. 40) temporarily revitalized the dead, mechanistic urban spaces of San Francisco through &ldquo;bucolic demonstrations&rdquo; in the form of portable parks featuring plants and animals.7 The onus was on the artists to find sites for these installations and obtain the necessary permits. lll<\/strong><\/em>, was a pioneering artwork that predated and influenced the current interest in <em>Parking Day<\/em> and <em>Parklets<\/em> in San Francisco and other cities.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Portable Parks l &#8211; lll<\/strong><\/em> and Sherk&#39;s <em><strong>Sitting Still Series<\/strong><\/em> are included the Orange County Museum of Art exhibition, <em><strong>California State Of Mind<\/strong><\/em>, part of the Getty&#39;s large initiative, <em><strong>Pacific Standard Time<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sherk&#39;s new work, <em><strong>Portable Park lV &#8211;&nbsp; past, present, future = A Living Library<\/strong><\/em>, in conjunction with Otis College of Art &amp; Design, the City of Santa Monica, Maserich,&nbsp; and featured in the Getty&#39;s <em><strong>Performance &amp;
