{"id":3611,"date":"2013-01-21T21:03:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T21:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?p=3611"},"modified":"2013-01-23T01:14:53","modified_gmt":"2013-01-23T01:14:53","slug":"winter-solstice-celebration-sun-food-crafts-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/omiexcelsior\/winter-solstice-celebration-sun-food-crafts-fun","title":{"rendered":"A Living Library Celebrates Winter Solstice:  Sun, Food, Crafts, and Fun!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the<em><strong> OMI\/Excelsior and Bernal Heights Branch Living Library &amp; Think Parks<\/strong><\/em>, December meant many things for us; a celebration of plentiful resources, familial traditions, winter vacation, and the seasonal solstice; all came together through much hard work and enjoyment.\u00a0 In some stories, the <em>Winter Solstice<\/em> signifies rebirth, where the shortening of daylight appeared to be the death of our sun; a natural resource that all life follows. \u00a0In many traditions, when the sun rises on the morning of the Solstice its presence is marked by celebration, and from this day forward the sun seems to grow in strength (truly growing only in hours of daylight\/day). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/omiexcelsior\/winter-solstice-celebration-sun-food-crafts-fun\/attachment\/stewardwstipend-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3625\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3625\" alt=\"stewardwstipend\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/stewardwstipend1-1024x764.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/stewardwstipend1-1024x764.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/stewardwstipend1-250x186.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/stewardwstipend1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This past December,\u00a0 <em><strong>A Living Library\u2019s <\/strong><strong><em>O<\/em>MI\/Excelsior Branch Student Stewards<\/strong><\/em> celebrated the end of their semester-long <em><strong>A.L.L. Mentorship Program<\/strong><\/em> with a Winter Solstice Party on December 21<sup>st<\/sup>, the first official day of winter. Food and festivities were shared with everyone who had helped out in the A.L.L. Gardens throughout the fall semester. As a parting gift students created holiday art projects that taught the importance of reusing natural resources from the garden. From Seasonal Stars and Garden-Dye Tree Drawings to the Stewards\u2019 tee-shirt printing of student-designed logos, that boasted \u201cWe ain\u2019t no Couch Potato!\u201d all students were able to create art work to take home for the holidays. Spirits were high and the laughter was tangible as the sun set into the darkness of the longest night of the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/omiexcelsior\/winter-solstice-celebration-sun-food-crafts-fun\/attachment\/photo-3-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3650 alignleft\" alt=\"photo 3\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-3-250x187.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-3-250x187.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-3.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>This celebration was just a small token of appreciation that we could give our Student Stewards after the countless hours they spent creating, beautifying, and teaching younger children about A.L.L. and the Gardens over the past four months. A reflection of our students\u2019 work ethic can be seen, in that the group as a whole received $500 in stipends for their collective 470+ hours learning and loving the Gardens.<a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/omiexcelsior\/winter-solstice-celebration-sun-food-crafts-fun\/attachment\/photo-4\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3651\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3651\" alt=\"photo 4\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-4-250x187.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-4-250x187.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-4.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many students were thrilled with the aid this would give them in family holiday shopping!
