The new A.L.L. Student Stewards <\/strong><\/em>Internship Program at St. Mary’s Park<\/em><\/strong> is off to a great start !\u00a0 Student Stewards learn about California natives and plant trees and understory as part of the ongoing development of the Bernal Heights Living Library & Think Park Nature Walk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

On July 8th,\u00a0<\/strong>Stewards<\/em> planted White Alder (Alnus rhombifolia<\/em>) and Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum<\/em>) in the Riparian Zone<\/em> in the south side of St. Mary’s Park, highlighting the area where hidden Islais Creek<\/em> still flows underground.<\/p>\n

\"small3\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/a>\"small4\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Stewards<\/em> are also planting other Native<\/em> Drought-Tolerant Zones <\/em>in the Nature Walk<\/em>.\u00a0 On July 15th & 17th students planted a Native Hillside<\/em> in St. Mary’s Park with California Flannel Bush (Fremontodendron californicum<\/em>), Matilija Poppy (Romneya coulteri<\/em>), Island Tree Mallow (Lavatera assurgentiflora<\/em>), Red Buckwheat (Erigonum grande<\/em> var. rubescens<\/em>), and four different types of Ceanothus<\/em> (‘Ray Hartman’,<\/em> griseus horizontalis<\/em>, ‘Dark Star’<\/em>, and ‘Yankee Point’<\/em>). \u00a0
<\/em><\/p>\n

Students also built and started planting their own\u00a0Organic Vegetable & Flower Garden<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The A.L.L. Student Stewards<\/em> Internship Program at St. Mary’s Park & Rec Center<\/em> targets youth from low-income families in the area, and teaches them to become environmental stewards for the Bernal Heights Living Library Nature Walk.<\/em> Students plant and establish California native trees and shrubs, and learn to care for them as part of this unique internship. They are exposed to science, gardening, green-skills job training, construction, writing, and observational drawing, while earning a monetary stipend for their participation. The program will continue in the Fall, after school Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
