{"id":5956,"date":"2014-08-09T22:30:55","date_gmt":"2014-08-10T05:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?p=5956"},"modified":"2014-08-10T20:40:25","modified_gmt":"2014-08-11T03:40:25","slug":"thriving-redwood-circle-nature-walk-lands-beautiful-boulders-understory-plantings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/bernal-heights-living-library-nature-walk\/thriving-redwood-circle-nature-walk-lands-beautiful-boulders-understory-plantings","title":{"rendered":"Thriving Redwood Circle in Living Library Nature Walk Lands Beautiful Boulders &#038; Native Understory Plantings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are so excited that our <strong><em>Redwood Circle<\/em><\/strong> in the <strong><em>Bernal Heights Living Library Nature Walk<\/em><\/strong> at the south side of <em><strong>St. Mary&#8217;s Park<\/strong><\/em> circling <em><strong>Alemany Farm<\/strong><\/em> near the currently hidden <em><strong>Islais Creek<\/strong><\/em>, is very healthy and growing !\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John Miller <\/strong><\/em>from<em><strong> SF Recreation &amp; Park Department (RPD),<\/strong><\/em> and I, found, purchased, and planted four gorgeous boulders on July 18, to help define the entrance to the <em>Redwood Circle <\/em>planted with <strong><em>California Native Redwoods <\/em><\/strong><em>(Sequoia sempervirens)<\/em>.\u00a0 Funds from our grant with <em><strong>California Strategic Growth Council<\/strong> <\/em>were used.<\/p>\n<p>This <em>Living Library Nature Walk<\/em> is a prototype, narrative, ecological landscape transformation, that could be occurring throughout the whole <em><strong>Islais Creek Watershed<\/strong><\/em>, the largest watershed in San Francisco, that interconnects eleven neighborhoods.\u00a0 In <em>Bernal Heights<\/em>, this <em>Nature Walk<\/em> is connecting multiple schools, parks, public housing, streets, and other open spaces calling attention to the <em>Watershed, <\/em>the <em>Islais Creek, <\/em>and diverse native species of plants and wildlife.<a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lyngso-Boulders.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6006\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lyngso-Boulders-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Lyngso Boulders\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lyngso-Boulders.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lyngso-Boulders-250x187.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/johnboulders.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6005\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/johnboulders-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"john&amp;boulders\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/johnboulders.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/johnboulders-250x187.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Boulders-Placed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6008\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Boulders-Placed-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Boulders Placed\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Boulders-Placed.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Boulders-Placed-250x187.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a>Two days later, on July 20th, we hosted two volunteer groups to plant the entrance area, and add native riparian understory plants in our <em>Redwood Circle<\/em> plant community, as well as some large Dogwood trees (Cornus nuttallii) and native shrubs on the nearby hillside.\u00a0 Our plant palette included a few varieties of Dogwood, California Rose, Sword Ferns, Wild Ginger, Redwood Sorrel, Woodland Strawberries, Huckleberry, and other species. It is beautiful !<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Young Adults <\/strong><\/em>from<em><strong> Jewish Community Federation<\/strong><\/em> began the morning planting, and the <em><strong>NYC\u00a0 YMCA Global Teens High School Students<\/strong><\/em> representing every NYC Borough, participated in the PM Volunteer Group, along with <em><strong>Bonnie Ora Sherk, Founder &amp; Director of A.L.L.,<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>Craig Heckman<\/strong><\/em> of the <em><strong>Alemany Farm&#8217;s Native Area Group, Jasmine Woo, our Summer Nature Walk Intern, Brian <\/strong><\/em>from<em><strong> RPD, <\/strong><\/em>and<em><strong> Yiwen Gong <\/strong><\/em>who came from<em><strong> Yale University <\/strong><\/em>to participate !\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Everyone had a fantastic time, and hundreds of native plants were planted.\u00a0 Our Redwood Landscape is growing and becoming a more lush environment!\u00a0 <em><strong>Have a look !<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a High School Students came to the site, and finished all the planting !\u00a0 A great day and a beautiful transformation !\u00a0 The <em>Redwood Circl<\/em>e is so beautiful and a wonderful place for respite !!!\u00a0 It is our natural cathedral in the <em>Bernal Heights Living Library Nature Walk in St. Mary&#8217;s Park<\/em> !\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thank you all, for your generous help and
