{"id":6539,"date":"2015-12-29T21:19:35","date_gmt":"2015-12-30T05:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?p=6539"},"modified":"2016-04-18T14:58:16","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T21:58:16","slug":"students-dig-omiexcelsior-living-library-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/omiexcelsior\/students-dig-omiexcelsior-living-library-park","title":{"rendered":"Students Dig in at OMI\/Excelsior Living Library &#038; Think Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Middle and High School Students\u00a0have been busy in the\u00a0<em>Living Library Gardens<\/em>\u00a0this Fall semester building a new worm farm, digging and planting water-recycling gardens, and cooking up healthy meals of freshly harvested vegetables at the\u00a0\u00a0<em>OMI\/Excelsior Living Library &amp; Think Park.\u00a0<\/em>During the school day, five hundred students from science classes, special needs classes, as well as social studies and arts classes at\u00a0<em>James Denman Middle School\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Leadership High School\u00a0<\/em>come to the garden regularly to learn ecology and science through interactive lessons and team garden activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6551 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0301-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0301\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0301.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0301-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0301-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a\u00a0<em><strong>A Living Library&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>science classes, students discussed the severe drought in California and explored the concept of using local resources in the garden. Together, the classes made the water-wise choice to create a garden that reuses water from the sink in our garden kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6542 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0576-1024x831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0576-250x203.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0576-768x623.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><em><strong>Students cleared out an area next to the sink and shaped the earth into a &#8220;Grey water Oasis&#8221; complete with an island, native flowers, herbs and cattail pond. Now the water we use to wash hands and dishes has created a vibrant ecosystem enjoyed by the students as well as the butterflies and hummingbirds.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A.L.L. Green Futures Eco-Stewards in the after-school program decided to repurpose the old garden sink into a new Worm Farm and built a frame and walls. The A.L.L Eco-Stewards learned how to make a sketch of their idea, measure the wood pieces, and safely use saws, hammers and nails to put together this cozy new home for the worms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6547 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/saw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/saw.jpg 640w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/saw-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><em><strong>A.L.L. Eco-Stewards measure and cut wood for Worm Farm and enjoy new Grey-Water Garden Oasis that they created.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During science class, students come into the garden to learn about healthy nutrition, harvest fresh vegetables, cook and share food together. In addition to the gardening and building projects, students harvested fresh chard, zucchini, kale, carrots, radishes, beans, and other vegetables from the Gardens and cooked a range of healthy dishes together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6541 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0646-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0646.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0646-188x250.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students prepared dishes with whole grains and vegetables including a tempeh stir fry with black rice, vegetable sushi, quinoa salad with greens and beets, as well as sweet treats such as rice pudding and oatmeal with fresh fruit and spices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6533 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0176-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0176.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0176-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><em><strong>A.L.L.
