{"id":6660,"date":"2016-03-23T21:53:33","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T04:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/?p=6660"},"modified":"2016-07-20T23:18:06","modified_gmt":"2016-07-21T06:18:06","slug":"beautifying-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alivinglibrary.org\/archive-site\/bernal-heights-living-library-nature-walk\/beautifying-streets","title":{"rendered":"Students Transform Street and Their School Adding To Living Library Nature Walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c7.staticflickr.com\/8\/7624\/27829650214_cc5ffd8523.jpg\" alt=\"Mar. 23, 2016 Blog Post\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the month of February, 2016, people from different parts of California came together to transform a street and add to the <em><strong>Living Library Nature Walk<\/strong><\/em> on Bernal Heights in San Francisco. \u00a0This ecological beautification project involved creating 12 new sidewalk\u00a0garden beds on formerly sterile concrete sidewalks, and planting them with California Native Trees and Understory plants in front of Junipero Serra Elementary School on Holly Park Circle across from Holly Park.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Bonnie Ora Sherk, Founder &amp; Director of<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>Life Frames, Inc.<\/strong><\/em> created the design for the planting,\u00a0and then connected with the various San Francisco Departments that helped make it all possible. \u00a0 The\u00a0<em><strong>California Strategic Growth Council<\/strong><\/em> generously provided the funding for the project as part of their grant for the full <em><strong>Living Library<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>Nature Walk<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>throughout the neighborhood that is linking multiple schools, parks, public housing, streets, and other open spaces leading to the currently hidden <em><strong>Islais Creek<\/strong><\/em> at the south side of <em><strong>St. Mary&#8217;s Park<\/strong><\/em>. *<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c3.staticflickr.com\/9\/8863\/27829650194_a02eb765fd.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Mar. 23, 2016 Blog Post\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #212121;\">In December, 2015, the <em><strong>SF Department of Public Works,<\/strong><\/em> led by <strong><em>Urban Forester, Chris Buck,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 removed the concrete in order to create the new 12 garden beds &#8211; and <\/span><span style=\"color: #212121;\">enlarge some of the existing tree basins.\u00a0 <em><strong>SF Unified School District Landscape Department<\/strong><\/em> led by <em><strong>Rick Maia<\/strong><\/em> delivered\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #212121;\">compost from <em><strong>Recology<\/strong><\/em> in order<\/span><span style=\"color: #212121;\"> to improve the soil quality in the new garden beds. \u00a0Now it was time to get planting.\u00a0 <em><strong>93 Students<\/strong><\/em> from <em><strong>Junipero Serra Elementary School<\/strong> <\/em>led by<em><strong> A Living Library Teacher, Kristin DeRose<\/strong> <\/em>took part in the planting.\u00a0 It was the students excitement and enthusiasm to help beautify their school that really moved<\/span><span style=\"color: #212121;\"> the project forward. \u00a0Once planting was complete, the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #212121;\"><em>SFUSD Landscape Department<\/em> donated and delivered a huge pile of\u00a0wood chips, which the\u00a0students\u00a0used to mulch the new garden beds. \u00a0 There were so many extra\u00a0wood chips that the students mulched all of the trees on the block ! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #212121;\">Through this whole, hands-on learning and transformation project,\u00a0students\u00a0discussed the importance of planting natives to improve air quality, increase\u00a0water percolation, restore the natural Watershed, and re-attract native wildlife species to the area.
