Bonnie Ora Sherk Presentation On Islais Creek Watershed, May 5, 7:30 PM, ZOOM

Dear Friends, You are invited to an illustrated talk I’m giving on the Islais Creek Watershed, the largest in San Francisco, showcasing the many opportunities for ecological transformation and flood mitigation, including some of the past accomplishments and ecological transformations that address many local, national, and international issues, including climate change, sea level rise, and other related systemic issues that Life Frames, Inc. & A Living Library have made, and is still working on. There will be a Q & A to answer questions and gain your input.  Your participation is important for the future of the area. Please join me and Planet Drum on Wednesday, May 5, 7:30 PM PDT, and register with Planet Drum to get Zoom information: mail@planetdrum.org using “zoom” in the subject line.

Additionally, on Saturday, May 8, at noon, you can join Judy Berg and Planet Drum, for a masked, in-person, socially distanced, Tour, of the prototype Bernal Heights Living Library & Think Park Nature Walk that Life Frames, Inc. designed and developed with the community beginning in 2002, that links multiple schools, parks, public housing, streets, and other open spaces leading to the currently hidden Islais Creek at the south side of St. Mary’s Park, Alemany Farm, Alemany Boulevard, and Highway 280.  Please register with Planet Drum: mail@planetdrum.org using "ALL Nature Walk" in the subject line.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.  Thank you ! Warm Wishes, Bonnie Ora [pdf-embedder url="https://alivinglibrary.org/archive-site/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/flyerinteractive-1.pdf" title="flyer(interactive)"]

New Year 2021-Pandemic and Beyond

To say 2020 was challenging is an understatement. It was meant to be 2020 CLEAR VISION.  Instead it was 2020 BLURRED VISION and was devastating for so many. Like many other organizations, businesses, and nonprofits, Life Frames, Inc. & A Living Library were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in ways that proved unimaginable. Where meetings and classes could go virtual, planting and pruning trees could not.

The pandemic slowed everybody down,” A.L.L. Founder & Director, Bonnie Ora Sherk, says.

Still, with challenge came opportunities. “So many deaths and lives were disrupted, but, as we all slowed down, our sensitivity, reflections, and appreciation for each other and all of life, as well as certain activities were being felt more deeply.  And, otherwise, we might have missed these qualities and important experiences.”

With the new year,” Sherk says, “I am optimistic for a better and healthier future for all, bringing new opportunities, as well as nurturing and strengthening our ongoing ecological transformations and integrated hands-on learning programs.”

A.L.L. is carrying this spirit into the new year with both ongoing and emerging projects:

Ongoing projects:

Emerging projects:

  • SF Art Institute Harker Award, Exhibition, Public Talk, Teaching in 2021-2022 plus A.L.L involvement in SFAI Reimagining
  • Invitation to participate in Liverpool Biennial, March-June 2021
  • Invitation to create one-person exhibition in Huesca, Spain at Centre de Arte y Naturaleza-Fundación Beulas (CDAN)
  • Invitation to join Ecology Arts Team at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Chongching, China
  • Opening of the new Roosevelt Island Public Library adjacent to RI Living Library & Think Park Gardens at the end of January 2021

What is Your Favorite Activity in A Living Library Garden?

In Spring this year, during one of A Living Library classes with students from Junipero Serra Elementary School, we asked our young Eco-Stewards to write down their favorite activities in A Living Library garden. They came up with beautiful drawings, collages, and interesting replies. Here is a short compilation of what they like to do in the garden:
