On Tuesday, January 28th, over 30 high school students and adults from Paraguay and Uraguay in the Amigos de las Americas Youth Ambassadors Program worked with Bonnie Ora Sherk, Life Frames, Inc. and SF Recreation & Park Department to plant 175 California native plants in St. Mary’s Park near Alemany Farm, as part of the Bernal Heights Living Library & Think Park Nature Walk. Much was accomplished during this productive day of planting, and the Nature Walk was helped in its growth and expansion ! Everyone had a great time !
Volunteers planted all California Natives: Matilija Poppy (Romneya coulteri), Ceanothus (Ceanothus ‘Yankee Point’), California Flannel Bush (Fremontodendron californicum), and Island Tree Mallow (Lavatera assurgentiflora).
The Bernal Heights Living Library Nature Walk links schools, parks, public housing, streets, and other open spaces leading to the currently hidden Islais Creek at the south side of St. Mary’s Park. The Nature Walk is creating a new, expressive, narrative landscape that is a prototype for what could be occurring throughout the whole Islais Creek Watershed, the largest in San Francisco, that interlinks eleven neighborhoods: Noe Valley, Mission, Bernal Heights, Potrero Hill, Bayview, Portola, Crocker-Amazon, Excelsior, OMI, Sunnyside, Glen Park.

The Youth Ambassadors also helped arrange seating in the Redwood Circle and learned about A Living Library.
More volunteer events are coming up ! The next one will be taking place March 29th, 9:30-1:30 in Holly Park. If you would like to participate, or for more information about volunteer planting days, please contact us: info@alivinglibrary.org
