A Living Library = A. L. L.

Everyone and everything on Earth and in Space is part of A Living Library of diversity: people, birds, trees, air, water, and all the things we create, such as - parks, gardens, schools, curricula, artworks, networks, communities, celebrations. A Living Library, or, A.L.L., for short, provides a way to understand that culture and technology are part of nature. It’s all nature.

A Living Library provides a powerful systemic framework, multiple methodologies and strategies for creating place-based, ecological change in communities and schools - locally and globally.

A.L.L. integrates local resources - past, present, future - and transforms them with community, to become vibrant, content-rich, art-filled, ecological learning landscapes; each Branch linked to another.

A Message From A Living Library To Our Students, Volunteers, Workshop Participants, Community Members, Funders & Friends

OMI/ Excelsior Living Library & Think Park

These past weeks have been a blur for most of us amid the COVID-19 crisis. We are immensely grateful to all the frontline workers in our neighborhoods who are helping others while risking their lives in this pandemic. To keep our communities safe, we request everyone to follow protective measures and maintain social distancing while being outside.

Supporting the current social distancing guidelines, we have cancelled the regular Spring Sessions of Free Community Workshops on Organic & CA Native Gardening in OMI/ Excelsior Living Library & Think Park until further notice. However, we are developing some online opportunities, so please stay tuned.

Even during these trying times, A Living Library Garden Instructors are trying their best to maintain the gardens in New York City and San Francisco. We really appreciate their dedicated efforts. Gardening is therapeutic and can be done even within the confines of our homes. With the help from our A.L.L. Garden Instructors, we are also starting a new, online multimedia series on gardening and ecological best practices for our younger students: K-12. Please Stay tuned for this upcoming series where we will share interesting and relevant green projects and ideas.

Wishing everyone health and safety,

Befriending Some Beneficial Bugs In Outdoor Classes In OMI/ Excelsior Living Library & Think Park

Worms, Bees, Ladybugs, Spiders!

What used to make them jump and squeal, are not so terrifying. They’re actually our allies.

Denman Students learned that worms are tending the soil, bees are spreading pollen, and lady bugs are protecting our crops from the hungry aphids.

Meanwhile, the spinning spiders are watching over the gardens keeping the mosquitoes and flies at bay.

Learning About Native Plants & Edible Herbs In OMI/ Excelsior Living Library & Think Park

Denman Middle School students learned about native plants, uninvited “weeds”, and which of these species are actually edible.  Afterwards, they explored the Living Library gardens searching for tasty greens to throw into their salad.

In a scavenger hunt, they found chickweed, cleavers, mint, nasturtium, and dandelion, to name a few.

Then they harvested heads of lettuce, washed and cut them up, and whipped up a delicious salad dressing—with fresh picked lemons from the garden.

All in ALL, in was a fun feast for the middle schoolers!
