A Living Library = A. L. L.

Everyone and everything on Earth and in Space is part of A Living Library of diversity: people, birds, trees, air, water, and all the things we create, such as - parks, gardens, schools, curricula, artworks, networks, communities, celebrations. A Living Library, or, A.L.L., for short, provides a way to understand that culture and technology are part of nature. It’s all nature.

A Living Library provides a powerful systemic framework, multiple methodologies and strategies for creating place-based, ecological change in communities and schools - locally and globally.

A.L.L. integrates local resources - past, present, future - and transforms them with community, to become vibrant, content-rich, art-filled, ecological learning landscapes; each Branch linked to another.

Young Roosevelt Island Living Library Farmers Bring Organic Produce To Seniors

Seniorsbefore;deadheadingmarigolds

Our Roosevelt Island Living Library & Think Park Garden was a huge success this summer in NYC ! The children worked so hard with Ms. Veronika, our NYC A.L.L. Teacher, and took such great care of all the plants.

ALL were happy and healthy !

So many vegetables and flowers were produced that children brought a big bounty to the nearby RI Senior Center.  All had a great time.  Later, the children mulched the garden paths.

Enjoy these pics:

AND LATER, MULCHING TIME !!!!

THE GARDEN IS MULCHED !

Bernal Heights Living Library at Junipero Serra CDC Grows New Learning Landscapes

Formerly large unusable open spaces or "dead spaces" at Junipero Serra Child Development Center were recently transformed into thriving, ecological Learning Zones for the children and community !

A new Fruit Orchard replete with Compost Bins and an adjacent Learning Zone of California Native Trees were added.  Trees were planted by SF Rotary Club and Junipero Serra PTA, led by Life Frames.  Each area, designed by Bonnie Ora Sherk and Life Frames, funded by Cal Fire and SFUSD, is now surrounded by a new redwood fence, built by Catarino Mendoza, making these raised areas safe and usable for children.  Everyone is enjoying these new landscape features.  Have a look !

Fun and Successful Nature Walk With WALK SF & A.L.L.

Dscn5232

On August 27, a large group of trekkers from WALK SF gathered at Junipero Serra Child Development Center, looked at maps and site plans, and learned about the Islais Creek Watershed and the Bernal Heights Living Library & Think Park Nature Walk leading to the Islais Creek, from Bonnie Ora Sherk.

600 diverse native trees have already been planted, funded by Cal Fire, and more trees and understory are being planned.  The Nature Walk has been underway since 2002, and hundreds of volunteers have participated in its planning and planting, with great help from city agencies:  RPD, DPW, HA, PUC, all led by Life Frames, Inc. and Bonnie Ora Sherk.

After much discussion, the walkers moved up Appleton, while viewing the native trees planted there, and looked across the street at Holly Courts Public Housing, where other  native trees have also been planted.  Everyone hiked through Holly Park seeing all the diverse species of natives trees planted, then wound their way along planted pathways with oaks,  ceanothus, and other species, down through St. Mary's Park, to the riparian area near the hidden Creek at the south end, into the Redwood Circle for a moment of silence and visualization, then back to St. Mary's Recreation Center to discuss its potential to become a community-wide Center for Urban Forestry and Watershed Education.  Many plans are in discussion and underway; it is a very auspicious opportunity for all !

Please enjoy some pics from the event below !
